All About Ed Sheeran

I was trying to think about what to write while I’m sitting in my apartment, so I was looking around and saw my poster of Ed Sheeran hanging on my wall. Of course I’m gonna talk about him! AKA my favorite singer/songwriter in general. I say in general because I change my favorites day to day, but I always come back to Ed Sheeran.

Where do I begin. Well I first discovered Ed’s music when I was on YouTube (where else) and there was an ad before the video (which now I just laugh at because Adblock has saved my life). Anyways, this ad was for Victoria’s Secret. Me, being the person that must know the name of every unknown song I hear, went cray cray. I figured out that the song was called “Give Me Love”.

Little did I know that this was the beginning to a beautiful appreciation for this guy from the UK. This was June 30, 2012. I know this because I looked at my iTunes and saw that I downloaded the song that morning at 2am, probably right after I heard it. I then began to listen to his music non-stop, which is what I tend to do when I find new music. I showed my little sister his music and she fell in love, too. It was kind of one of those things where no one really knew about him in the United States yet, so he was like my own little secret obsession. Only the hipsters knew about him. Hahahaha. He started to get noticed, especially since his song “A Team” was single of the week on iTunes. By that time, I basically had his whole album downloaded on my computer and was listening to him every hour of every day. He is truly an amazing artist.

I think that what I find most amazing about him is that he writes all of his own music. Basically all the songs on his album + are about his girlfriend at the time, Alice. The fact that he writes his own song is so rare these days; even the most famous singers all have people that write music for them to sing. I really think he deserves more credit; it’s hard to write song! And his songs are so lyrical and aesthetically pleasing to the ear. Like I don’t know how he comes up with some of this stuff:

“Wake Me Up”

So I’ll take you to the beach
And walk along the sand
And I’ll make you a heart pendant
With a pebble held in my hand
And I’ll carve it like a necklace
So the heart falls where your chest is
And now a piece of me is a piece of the beach
And it falls just where it needs to be
And rests peacefully
So you just need to breathe
To feel my heart against yours now, against yours now

‘Cause maybe I’m just in love when you wake me up

And if you want to hear how well it flows with the music go to 2:46

I think a big part of why he is not super famous is because he is not the cutest looking dude in all the land. It is so evident that looks really get you places- Justine Bieber, One Direction, The Wanted- plus, people just like boy bands. When Ed Sheeran performs it is just him, his guitar, microphone, and his loop pedal. I got to experience his amazing performance when I got to see him in concert September 26, 2012 with my little sister. BEST DAY EVER. I didn’t know all of his songs when we went to his concert, but his concert was still incredible. It was definitely my favorite concert I’ve ever been to, and I’ve been to a lot!

After the concert, my sister and I were on an Ed-high and could not stop listening to his music. I bought his CD and listened to it over and over again. I now know every word to every song on his album +. I also found his older songs from when he was just releasing singles back in the day. I don’t know why I haven’t gotten sick of his music yet. His CD is in my car and since my radio antenna is busted, I listen to his CD every time. His lyrics are just so meaningful and the melodies with those words are beautiful. Ed Sheeran is a legend in my mind, and I hope other people will take the time to appreciate his phenomenal music.

Be nice to everyone, always smile, and appreciate things because it could all be gone tomorrow. -Ed Sheeran
